Expressive and confrontational (e.g. Israel, France)

  • Direct: easy to read, disagrees openly
  • Express their emotions

Inexpressive avoiders (e.g. Japan or Korea):

  • Suppress emotions and avoid open disagreement
  • Take criticism personally

Unexpressive but confrontational (e.g. Germany, The Netherlands)

  • Direct: disagree openly and bluntly
  • Suppress emotions, but
  • Value open debate and communicate honestly and transparently

Expressive avoiders (e.g. Philippines, Saudi Arabia)

  • Emotionally expressive but avoid confrontation
  • Can seem open, but are sensitive to criticism
