Venture Capitalist Paul Graham Share this expert PG Paul Graham ‘s influential blog post How to disagree arose from his observation that the internet was becoming a conversation. He dissected the arguments he was seeing and suggested a disagreement hierarchy that helps to evaluate the quality of an argument. The quality of a disagreement depends directly on the quality of the arguments presented by the participants. In order to disagree well, it’s important to make good arguments.

According to the hierarchy, good arguments are carefully-reasoned counterarguments and refutations. Ineffective arguments either lack supporting evidence or criticize the interlocutor personally, bypassing the topic of disagreement altogether.
