Fluency: When learning feels easy it's probably not effective

Chapter 1 The importance of learning to learn

3/34

Conditions that make learning seem easier can actually decrease long-term learning.

In the context of learning, fluency refers to the subjective feeling of ease or speed of processing of new, to-be-learned information. When learning feels easy, learners are experiencing fluency. But fluency can be misleading. Fluency can be produced by making something seem more memorable perceptually (e.g. larger, bolder font), or by priming learners with the information that they will need to recall at a later time. Fluency can lead people to believe that they have successfully learned something, although they have not.

Fluency is a hallmark of ineffective learning strategies like re-reading, highlighting, copying notes, etc. In each of these strategies, the learner is attempting to absorb information passively. Better learning strategies make learning a more active exercise by introducing desirable difficulties . Examples of such strategies include self-testing , summarizing, etc. The effort required by these methods makes it more likely that the information will be remembered.

… effective learning can be fun, it can be rewarding, and it can save time, but it is seldom easy.
