We are in the midst of an extraordinary outpouring of scientific work concerning the mind and brain. Academics from several disciplines — including psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, and education — are attempting to discover how and why certain aspects of learning may lead to a more or less favorable result.
The science of learning has made incredible progress in uncovering effective learning strategies . Unfortunately, these strategies have not been widely adopted. Few people are aware of the new insights regarding learning strategies. Some of the most commonly used learning strategies have been shown to be ineffective. On balance, the advances in learning science have not changed the way people learn or the way educational institutions teach. Misconceptions about learning are hard to break, especially since the most effective strategies are not always obvious or intuitive. The ability to effectively learn is the most important skill a person can have because it is the foundation for learning anything else.
