The signs of sleepiness are familiar to everyone: yawning , frequent blinking and heavy eyes, trouble keeping head up and nodding off, irritability, difficulty focusing. However, sleep research has shown that people who are sleep deprived quickly adapt to their state and do not always recognize just how impaired they are.

There are many ways to identify potential sleep deprivation, here are a few examples:

  • Getting less than seven hours of sleep on a regular basis
  • Feeling drowsy during the day
  • Needing an alarm clock to wake up in the morning
  • Falling asleep in less than five minutes
  • Sleeping much longer on the weekend than on weekdays
  • Needing coffee to stay awake during the day
  • Struggling to focus, especially when reading
  • Forgetfulness and poor performance
  • Irritability or moodiness
  • Food cravings and weight gain
